Background

The state-of-the-art Star Cruises Ship Simulator ('SCSS') is a joint-venture agreement with the world-renowned Danish Maritime Institute ('DMI'). The SCSS was completed in 1998 and is located within the Star Cruises Terminal complex in Port Klang, Malaysia. The SCSS is the only one of its kind in the world owned by a shipping company. Today it is managed by Star Cruises and supported by DMI.

The very nature of Star Cruises business demands the highest standards of operational safety. Star Cruises aims to meet the safety management standards of corporate airlines. The Ship Simulator is used to develop and simulate the most optimum passage plans and operational procedures for the areas of operation of Star Cruises' vessels.

Features and Functions

Star Cruises ships are equipped with advanced integrated bridges, voyage data recorders and all officers are trained to a very high level in both Bridge Resource Management and technical skills including precision navigation.

The Main Bridge of the SCSS is a replica of the bridge onboard SuperStar Leo and SuperStar Virgo, Star Cruises' purpose-built twin megaships.

The SCSS provides Star Cruises and the Asian region with a versatile facility for full-mission bridge training and research applications. SCSS is able to simulate the environments of the various ports of call and climactic conditions combining audio and video effects, providing virtual-realistic scenarios of actual port scenes.

Adding to the realism provided by the SCSS, training conducted at the centre also includes analysis and review of onboard episodes recorded in Black boxes.

SCSS is also designed for crew training and familiarisation, as a tool for establishing and refining best practices in port entry procedures, emergency situations and bridge resource management.
